Lower School Science Specialist Autumn Burton recently presented at the National Science Teaching Association conference in New Orleans, demonstrating culturally responsive teaching practices in science education. Workshop participants received Next Generation Science Standards-aligned lessons focused on identity mapping, including a modeling exercise where individual identities were represented as atoms and collective identities as molecules. Autumn has implemented this approach with our 4–5 students, guiding them to explore their personal identities through molecular representation. Students created "identity molecules" by assigning different aspects of themselves to individual atoms, forging a unique connection between self-discovery and scientific understanding.

It’s time for another Waynflete Bookstagram 📚 Support Waynflete’s libraries by using the links in our bio to purchase one (or more!) of these books from our partner @print.bookstore—20 percent of proceeds go straight to our libraries! This month`s Bookstagram theme is reimagined classics.
"Anne Arrives" by Kallie George is a charmingly illustrated, early reader adaptation of "Anne of Green Gables." It introduces young readers to the spunky, spirited, and unforgettable Anne Shirley as she finds her place among the stodgy adults of her new home. (This book is appropriate for ages 4+.)
"A Wish in the Dark" by Christina Soontornvat is inspired by Victor Hugo’s "Les Misérables." In this story, Pong is being hunted by Nok, the disgraced warden’s daughter, after he escapes from the prison he was born in. As their journeys intersect, they discover the harsh truths about the oppressive systems in which they live. (This book is appropriate for ages 9+.)
In the reimagined classic, "Peter and the Starcatchers" by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson, readers enjoy an adventurous prequel to J. M. Barrie`s "Peter Pan." Peter teams up with a new character, Molly, daughter of the British Ambassador to Rundoon, to keep a treasure box full of stardust out of the hands of villains and pirates. A satisfying mix of swashbuckling, treachery, adventure, and mildly spicy humor will keep the pages turning in this middle-grade novel. (This book is appropriate for ages 10+.)
In "Pride," Haitian-American author, Ibi Zoboi reimagines Jane Austen`s Bennett and Darcy families in the 21st-century Bronx, New York. Zuri Benitez resents the wealthy Darcy family for buying up the brownstones across the street and converting them into a single mansion, furthering the gentrification of the neighborhood Zuri loves. Her sister Janae starts dating the elder Darcy son, but the prideful Zuri and Darius Darcy are both quick to judge. This book is a satisfying romance and thoughtful exploration of race, class, and connection across social division. (This book is appropriate for ages 13+.)
Happy reading!

Grade 6 students recently embarked on an interdisciplinary urban hike that transformed Portland`s streets into an interactive classroom. This day-long adventure tied into the grade 6 theme of "adapt, survive, and thrive," highlight how Portlanders have tackled challenges across generations.
Students learned about the Great Portland Fire`s influence on safety innovations, explored sustainable maritime technologies like mycelium buoys, and even tried their hand at oyster shucking! They uncovered locally invented solutions, from commercial sewing breakthroughs to creative uses of invasive species, and decoded the maritime flag system at the Portland Observatory. The three-mile trip concluded with a spirited trivia contest on the Eastern Prom, where students journaled about how specific innovations demonstrated human adaptation or created historical fiction pieces that brought these innovations to life.
This immersive experience embodied Waynflete`s commitment to interdisciplinary learning, combining history, environmental science, and social-emotional growth in one memorable journey.

Upper School faculty member and advisor Rhoen Fiutak, along with Waynflete trustee Cricket King P’26, recently joined students and faculty from Waynflete, Cape Elizabeth, Yarmouth, Gorham, and Windham high schools for a daylong Story Exchange facilitator training workshop, led by Narrative 4. Narrative 4 states on their website that the story exchange is a way to “highlight our shared humanity. Through the exchange of personal narratives we see the world and ourselves with empathy.” The Can We? Project (a program developed by Waynflete`s Third Thought Initiatives for Civic Engagement) produced this special training to help student groups plan their own story exchange events later in the school year. Read more about Narrative 4’s story exchange initiative at narrative4.com/story-exchange.

It`s #FeatureFriday, and this week we`re turning the spotlight on Waynflete alum Ryan Blotnick `00. In this brief interview, Ryan shares his passion for music, addresses how a Waynflete education shaped his career, and reflects on his recent performance on campus with former Waynflete Jazz Combo and Band director Ray Morrow.
What motivates you, and why does what you do matter?
“Music is all about connecting, and connection is the greatest thing about being human. We love to celebrate, rejoice, and feel things together. At Waynflete, I remember I had to memorize the definition of humanism—the belief in the power and dignity of humans. When you listen to incredible music, you can feel the power and the dignity in it, even in the absence of words. I think part of my mission with music is showing that non-verbal ways of thinking are valid. There is a long history of oppression and hierarchy built into our language, and I love that improvised music cuts right through that and creates a space where everyone can be creative together.”
What aspects of your Waynflete experience do you think influenced or supported your career?
“Playing in the big band and combo under the direction of Ray Morrow was a huge inspiration. Ray was a teacher who exemplified excellence and dedication to the music, and you could hear him practicing his horn all the time—he practiced what he preached! He was an incredibly generous educator as well. He really got us fired up. And learning how to write essays may have been the most useful skill I got out of high school. For example, when I met the president of Songlines Recordings, I wrote to him and sent some music. He was a literature major and was impressed with my ability to write about my music. I think that helped us build a rapport that led me to three records on his label. Whether it’s writing to a label, writing to clubs to book gigs, or applying to grants, it is all basically variations on essay writing. I think that what I learned about writing at Waynflete even helped influence my musical composition process.”

You may have heard—it`s Election Day!
Liv Therrien ’25, Mia Haley ’26, and Gianna Barbieri ’25—who are all members of Youthwork Makes the Boothwork, an organization that aims to get young people involved by serving as poll workers—recently organized an Upper School mock election on the 2024 ballot questions. The goal was to engage students in the democratic process, increase awareness of current issues on the ballot, and help build an informed, civically minded student body at Waynflete. By simulating the voting experience, the mock election encouraged students to think critically about real-world issues and prepared them for future participation in local and national elections.
Middle School students completed a political issues ranking exercise to help them discover their voting preferences. From there, they “voted” by checking in at a new classroom with their voter registration cards and student keycards, casting a ballot behind a voting screen, and depositing it in a ballot box created by Visual Arts Department Chair Jona Rice. Teachers shared the results with students during community discussion time.
